The crime rate in Goa during the first three quarters of the year has shown a considerable increase of 13.35 per cent as against 2016 with a pronounced decline in the rate of detection.
Between January and September 2016, a total of 1,902 cases were reported. However, during the corresponding period this year, 2,156 cases have been registered resulting in an increase of over 250 cases.
The implications of trend have been further exacerbated owing to the slight decrease in crime detection rate. Of the 1,902 cases reported in the first nine months of 2015, 1,566 cases or 82.33 per cent were detected. From January to September 2017, of the 2,156 cases reported, 1,751 cases have been detected amounting to a detection rate of 81.22 per cent, which is 1.11 per cent lower than the previous year.
The present trend threatens to break the peak scaled by Goa Police each year in 2015 and in 2016 by working towards reducing the crime rate and increasing the detection rate.
In 2015, the crime rate had shown a steep decrease of 31.27 per cent and the detection rate had increased by 13.5 per cent. The then Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar had made a proud mention of this fact in his Liberation Day speech in 2015.
The tempo was maintained in the following year 2016 with the crime rate showing a decrease of 12.34 per cent, though the detection rate had decreased by a mere 0.56 per cent.
