BELAGAVI

In what could be termed as a dream come true for the people of Belagavi and north Karnataka region, the Central government has sanctioned a direct train line between Dharwad and Belagavi -- a long standing demand of people of north Karnataka. The present rail connectivity between these two important cities is through Londa junction which is a circuitous route and time taken for rail travel is approximately 3 hours.

The new railway line between Dharwad and Belagavi is expected to reduce the traffic between Dharwad and Londa and make way for new trains between Vasco, Bangaluru, Hyderabad and other cities in the region.

Special efforts by Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi, who after taking over, were responsible for getting the survey for this railway line sanctioned in August 2019.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the 90 km new broad gauge railway line was sanctioned during the current budget and an approval was sent to the SWR on Friday.

The DPR for the new railway line between Dharwad (Kyarkoppa) and Belagavi (via Kittur, M.K. Hubballi & Bagewadi) was submitted to Railway Board in November 2019. This new broad gauge line will have 11 stations and will be implemented at the total cost of the new Rs 988.3 crore approximately.  With this new line, the distance between the three important cities of Hubballi, Dharwad and Belagavi will reduce by about 35 kms which is significant. Running time of trains between Hubballi to Belagavi and further to Bengaluru is also expected to reduce. The new railway line is also expected to reduce rail traffic congestion between Vasco & Hubbali which in turn would enable Indian Railways more direct trains to Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
