MARGAO
South Goa Additional Collector, Sanjit Rodrigues, has clarified that directions were issued to the Margao Municipal Chief Officer only in respect of those trees posing imminent danger to public/private property as per the reports of the Mamlatdar of Salcete.
A press statement issued by district authorities stated that Cyclone “Tauktae” had affected the Goan coast and other parts of Goa leaving a trail of destruction like damage to electricity infrastructure, houses, trees, etc along with a loss of human life.
Accordingly, directions were issued to the Mamlatdar of Salcete to conduct a detailed survey of trees posing imminent danger to private/public properties in case of tree fall during monsoon within the jurisdiction of Margao Municipal Council.
“The Mamlatdar of Salcete filed detailed reports whereby details of trees posing imminent danger were listed. On perusal of the reports, it was ascertained that the trees indicated by the Mamlatdar of Salcete need to be trimmed/cut to avoid loss of public/private property during monsoon; accordingly, the Collector and District Disaster Management Authority, South Goa issued three orders to the Chief Officer, Margao Municipal Council in May and July to execute the work,” the press note stated.
It added that the MMC Chief Officer was directed to carry out trimming of trees as indicated in the report of Mamlatdar of Salcete, except in cases where trees stand on private land and their owners are in disagreement of trimming of these trees.
