With the deadline of November 10 having lapsed and with no sign of work on the rehabilitation plan, the displaced GMC kiosk owners have now threatened to go on indefinite strike from Monday.
Speaking to reporters outside St Cruz MLA Tony Fernandes’ residence on Wednesday, a kiosk owner, Domnic Pereira, said they had kept their strike on hold after assurance by MLA Fernandes that work would start by November 10.
“But there is no sign of commencement of the work and we have now decided that we are going to wait for four more days, after which we are going on indefinite strike from Monday,” Pereira added.
However, MLA Fernandes pointed out that work on demarcation has already begun and said that the actual work will begin in a few days.
“The financial approval has been granted, work order has been given and the work should begin soon,” said Fernandes, but the kiosk owners were in no mood to listen as they stuck to their decision on going on indefinite strike from Monday.
Fernandes, who had earlier said he would also sit on strike if work did not start by November 10, however, said the need has not come as all approvals have been granted as promised by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.
To a question of whether there is interference from certain individuals who also wish to contest from St Cruz, Fernandes did not give a definite reply but said it was because of such individuals that the work is getting delayed.
