The Cumbarjua Congress along with locals raised opposition to the diversion of traffic through Gaundalim, which has caused inconvenience to the locals and disturbed their peace. The diversion of traffic was effected due to the ongoing work on the Dhauji rail overbridge.

Speaking to reporters at the Gaundalim ferry junction on Saturday, Congress leader Samil Volvoikar said after the traffic had been diverted, traffic jams were witnessed, causing hardships to the locals while moving in and around the area. “Also, the Gaundalim ferry junction area is known to be an accident-prone zone, and the traffic diversion has only worsened the situation as vehicles are coming at speed,” said Volvoikar, while adding that there is no traffic police posted to regulate the traffic, which further adds to the chaos.

“Sometimes the locals have to themselves act as traffic police in the absence of any policing,” he said.

Meanwhile, the locals have suggested that traffic police should be posted at regular intervals, particularly at junctions, and concave mirrors installed to alert motorists of oncoming traffic. “There are roads at 90-degree angles where motorists find it difficult to see oncoming traffic, due to which concave mirrors have to be installed,” a local stated.

The locals have also demanded that heavy traffic should be banned from entering Gaundalim. Finally, the locals said that until traffic police are posted and concave mirrors installed, the traffic coming from the Marcel side should be stopped.

Meanwhile, SDPO Sudesh Naik visited the area to understand the problems faced by the locals.

Cumbarjua Congress Block President Vishal Volvoikar, IYC District President Rinaldo Rosario and other Congress leaders were present.
