The roads leading to the markets were closed and many vendors selling diyas, crackers, fruits and flowers were allotted space by MMC on a temporary basis. The vendors cleared on Friday mornings and roads were opened to public. However, what was left behind were heaps of garbage, paper, plastic and heavy stones that were used on plastic sheets that had items to offer on the floor.
"Many stall owners have dismantled their makeshift stalls and left behind big stones used by them everywhere causing a bi
g problem for us to get our cars in. The heaps of garbage at the parking lane makes it difficult to park our vehicles," said a market shopkeeper on condition of anonymity.
The citizens on their regular visit to the market were in for shock when they found the entire stretch of the road filled with garbage comprising plastic, paper and food waste.
"This is a common occurrence. MMC should begin an extensive drive to clear the garbage and suggest measures to avoid a similar situation the next time. The MMC collects money from these vendors. They are not at all bothered about garbage. Swachh Bharat is just an event. Though these vendors block the entry to our shops, we stay quiet as it is in the interest of people during the festive season. When will MMC learn to maintain cleanliness while think of generating revenue. This will be the same scene in some more days while Tulsi Vivah is celebrated and roads are blocked
and allotted to temporary vendors," added another shopkeeper.
It is learnt that the garbage left behind by these vendors was not cleared till late afternoon after which some shopkeepers got together and removed all the stones. They later called the authority concerned to clear the garbage.
