Don’t be ashamed to take up farming: Cortalim MLA

VASCO
Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha on Thursday said people of Goa should not feel ashamed to take up farming as their profession.
Saldanha was speaking on the sidelines of free paddy seeds distribution programme organised by Cortalim Panchayat. This was the first time that a free seeds distribution programme was taken up by Cortalim Panchayat to promote farming in Cortalim constituency.
Saldanha distributed free paddy seeds to the farmers in the presence of Sarpanch Senia Periera and Deputy Sarpanch Raymond D'Sa.
Speaking further, Saldanha said: "I have just come back from Australia, where I have seen so much of trees and greenery and major section of people in Australia are farmers and they are extremely proud of their profession."
"The number of farmers have reduced. No one must be ashamed to take up farming as a profession. Where will the rice come if we have no farmers? The government will extend all support to farmers and Goa government wants farming to be promoted in Goa. The government will give subsidy on seeds, fertilizers and assist and encourage farming. We should not be ashamed to call ourselves farmers," said Saldanha.
Sarpanch Senia Pereira said the event was organised for the first time and the sole motto was to promote farming in the constituency.
Deputy Sarpanch Raymond D'Sa said he had realised the pains of farmers as he was a son of a farmer himself and assured to buy back rice from farmers at Rs 23 per kg.
"We have 250 farmers in Cortalim, but the number of farmers has come down in Cortalim area with rising expenses. I request MLA Saldanha to provide all assistance to farmers like providing fertilizers, etc. We will provide you free seeds and you don't have to buy seeds. Once farming is done, whatever rice is left after you keep for yourself, we will buy your rice at Rs 23 per kg. People offer Rs 15 per kg, but we will buy at Rs 23 per kg," he said.
