MAPUSA
Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco on Saturday hit out at Calangute MLA Michael Lobo for "mixing religion" to build up positive perception around Mhadei to favour his beleaguered party on the issue.
"I want to tell Michael Lobo not to mix religion in the Mhadei river issue. We have not come as Christians here (in the fight over Mhadei). We have come to save Goa," Lourenco thundered.
The Congress MLA from Curtorim was addressing an awareness meeting of Ami Goenkar on the Mhadei issue in Mapusa.
r />According to Lourenco, the deputy speaker has been moving around trying to persuade people that the Catholic religion says we need to give water to those who are thirsty.
He said Lobo has also been spreading the word that the water was for the purpose of drinking. "This is not drinking water. This is irrigation water. Someone should tell this to Michael Lobo. Or else, I will tell him on the Opinion Poll day," the Curtorim MLA said.
Lourenco further said that as a legislator, he will take up the issue with all his might on the floor of the House and stressed the need for all Goans to come together to fight for Mhadei.
Ajeetsingh Rane, Amrut Agarwadekar, Bharat Bagkar, Shyam Govekar, Janardhan Tamankar, Sudesh Tivrekar, Vijay Bhike, Rajan Ghate and several other leaders from different NGOs also addressed the meeting.
Several leaders criticized Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar for writing a letter to the BJP leader, B S Yeddyurappa without taking his cabinet or the MLAs of the Goa assembly.
In the end, the group took a resolution requesting the chief minister to withdraw the letter written to Yeddyurappa.
