Donate organs, get insurance if you don't believe in helmets: DGP

PANAJI: Director General of Police Muktesh Chander on Tuesday sarcastically commented that people who don’t believe in wearing safety gear like helmets should donate their organs so that they can be beneficial to someone else after their death.
Chander while addressing a gathering on road safety even compared himself to 15th century Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei for being targeted for the strict enforcement of the rule mandating the wearing of helmets.
“Donate your organs so that someone will be benefitted and make a life insurance policy so that your family also benefits after your death,” the DGP said.
Chander was speaking in defence of the Traffic Sentinel Scheme which has come in for severe criticism by some sections of society and political leaders in the recent assembly session.
The DGP also questioned the critics asking whether their head is made of iron. “If you don’t believe in using a helmet then say so, why blame the traffic sentinels? We all put screen guards on our mobiles, but we don’t want to use a helmet,” he commented, pointing out that 182 two-wheeler riders died on the road last year thus indicating the need for compulsory enforcement of the helmet rule.
“We achieved 20% reduction in road accidents in 2018,” he added appealing for cooperation to further reduce this number.
While comparing his position with Galileo DGP said:, "When Galileo said the Earth moves around the Sun, everyone abused him. Finally he was sent to prison and he died in jail. Those who do not believe in wearing helmets should join conspiracy theory groups like the "Flat Earth Society", whose members continue to believe that the Earth is flat."
