Appealing to people not to fall prey to social media which exaggerated the recent misunderstandings between communities, Mormugao Muslim Peace Committee (MMPC) member Ayaz Khan said people of all religions were living in harmony in Vasco.
He was speaking to reporters during the Iftar organised by the MMPC to promote communal harmony in the port town.
"We invited people from across religions, all four MLAs from Mormugao taluka and police officials from Vasco police station to display solidarity and communal harmony. We had recently heard about clashes, but such things should not happen and people should not fall prey to social media because the picture is different and all of us across religions have been united in Vasco for ages," said Khan.
Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar, Cortalim MLA Anton Vas, BJP leader Urfan Mulla, Mormugao DySP Nilesh Rane and Vasco PI Kapil Nayak were present at the function.
Godinho said such Iftar gatherings are a great initiative where people of all religions meet along with the elected leaders and police as well, adding that such a tradition of inter-religious harmony must be kept alive in the future as well.
Salkar said the initiative displayed the true essence of Unity in Diversity where people from all religions had participated in an Iftar.
