MARGAO
Agitated Margao Municipal councillors on Thursday complained to the Chief Officer over the attitude of the Municipal market inspector in respect of complaints lodged over illegal activities in the wards.
The councillors took strong objection to the remarks made by the Market inspector Santo, when he asked the councillors to give in writing the illegal activities in their wards.
Taking umbrage to the market inspector’s remarks, the councillors, cutting across party lines, barged into the chamber of the Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes to complain against the market inspector and to caution him over the illegal activities.
When the market inspector is reported to have further remarked that he cannot initiate action against the illegalities since he gets the calls from above, the councillors demanded that the inspector should unveil the names of those who put pressure on the officials not to crack a whip against the illegalities.
A visibly agitated councillor Sidhant Gadekar told the Chief Officer to guide the market inspector, saying the official cannot give lame excuses in refusing to act against the illegal activities. “The market inspector cannot insist on letter complaining on the illegal activities. He can straight away go and verify the facts,” he said.
After giving a patient hearing to the City Fathers, the Chief Officer told the market inspector that he can unveil the names of those who pressurise him not to act against the illegalities.
