The gram sabha of Dramapur-Sirlim village Panchayat witnessed an uproar after members strongly objected to the site of the proposed MRF garbage treatment plant.
In fact, members shot down the proposal and demanded that the Panchayat look out for an alternative site to set up the MRF shed.
Sarpanch Avita Pereira later assured that the panchayat will not go ahead with the proposed site since the gram sabha members have expressed their concern over the location of the plant.
In fact, the MRF shed site identified to set up the proposed MRF shed took the centre stage at the gram sabha chaired by Sarpanch Avita Pereira when members raised their strong objections to the location.
Members pointed out that the proposed MRF shed site is proposed on the foot of the hill, adding that the site shortlisted is a hilly area, with a canal at the base, besides playing host to natural springs.
They further contended that the site in question is a sloppy land, raising apprehensions that water from the shed would flow down from east to the west to the water bodies and the river Sal.
A member pointed out that the site in question is an eco-sensitive zone, rich is flora and fauna, demanding the Panchayat reconsider the site in question.
Sarpanch Avita Pereira later assured the members that the Panchayat would not go ahead with the site, saying that the Panchayat would scout for alternate land to set up the MRF shed.
The Sarpanch later told the media that the Panchayat wanted to set up the MRF shed in order to treat the wet and sanitary waste generated in the village. “We were planning to have a permanent shed to handle the waste generated in the village. We have decided not to go ahead with the MRF shed site as we are with the people”, she said.
The Sarpanch said the Panchayat had identified a site near the residence of former Velim MLA Manu Fernandes, adding that the site could not be finalised since the matter in the Administrative Tribunal.
Velim MLA Cruz Silva, who attended the meeting, suggested that the Panchayat constitute a three-member committee to scout for feasible land to set up the MRF shed.
