Taps ran dry in thousands of households in Salcete and other parts of the South Goa on New Year day as the Selaulim pipeline once again failed, but for a different reason.
Water pumping operations at the Selaulim water treatment plant came to a halt on Wednesday morning for around four hours, disrupting water supply to the Salcete and other areas.
Coastal areas of Salcete, including Benaulim which depend on the new Selaulim pipeline were affected with no water supply to the households till Wednesday evening.
When The Goan called up the PWD, water supply officials to shed light on the water scarcity in many parts of Salcete and neigbouring areas, a senior officials attributed the water shortage to the four hour power outage on Wednesday morning.
Expressing helplessness in meeting the water requirements of the consumers, the official pointed out that when the very water pumping operations had come to a halt for want of power supply, they could do nothing from Selaulim, but wait for the pumping to start on Wednesday evening. “As per information, there was a power outage at around 9.30 am on Wednesday at Selaulim and the power supply was restored around 1.30 pm. No sooner the power supply was restored, pumping operations started and the operation ended at 3. 30 pm,”
