An illegal slaughter shed at Tontem Morod, Cansaulim, was busted on Saturday evening after officials of the District Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), South Goa, found three buffaloes tied near a shed without fodder or water and allegedly kept for slaughter. The animals were rescued after SPCA officer Raj Pratik, a resident of South Goa, filed a complaint stating that two residents from Cansaulim had been running an illegal slaughter house.

In his complaint, Pratik stated that the accused — Abdul Bepari and Shabbir Bepari, both residents of Cansaulim — were operating an unauthorised slaughterhouse in the area and had subjected the animals to cruelty by keeping them in inhumane conditions.

Based on the complaint, Verna Police registered offences under Section 11(1)(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, Sections 3, 5 and 8 of the Goa, Daman and Diu Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1978, Sections 4, 5 and 8 of the Goa Animal Preservation Act, 1995, and Rule 3 of the Slaughterhouse Rules, 2001.

The investigation is being handled by PSI Mahesh Bhomkar of Verna Police Station, under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar and the guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
