Dy Collector declines permission for ‘Julus’ procession in Canacona

CANACONA

The Canacona deputy collector has declined to grant permission to hold a ‘Julus’ procession on the occasion of Eid Milad un Nabi on Monday, on grounds that there would be a traditional procession of Ganapati Visarjan that day.

The deputy collector, however, granted permission for use of sound systems in the Masjid for the traditional festival.

Canacona Dy Collector/SDM Madhu G Narvekar was responding to an application by Ilhas Yacub Khan, President of Sunni Islami Jama Masjid, who had sought permission to have a ‘Julus’ permission along the traditional route on September 16.

In the order, Narvekar informed that the permission cannot be considered as there would be a traditional procession of Ganapati Visarjan from Chaudi to Palolem.

The deputy collector informed that on perusal of a police inquiry report submitted by Canacona police inspector through the Canacona Sub Divisional Police Officer, the application for grant of permission to hold ‘Julus’ on September 16 could not be considered.

It may be recalled following receipt of an application in the office of Dy Collector seeking permission to hold the ‘Julus’ procession on the occasion of Eid Milad un Nabi to be celebrated on Monday, some activists submitted applications objecting to the grant of any permission to hold procession on Monday.

While claiming that it is not a tradition to hold a ‘Julus’ procession in Canacona, the activists further stated that the Ganapati Visarjan ceremonies at Chaudi are scheduled for the day, and feared that both events could create a law and order problem if permission is granted to hold a ‘Julus’ procession.
