ECI team arrives in State to assess ground situation

A high-level team of the Election Commission of India arrived in Goa on Monday and is expected to take stock of the ground preparedness of the election machinery vis-a-vis conduct of the Goa legislative assembly elections due in February-March next year.

While a team of the ECI officials arrived on Monday afternoon, the three election commissioners, including Chief Election Commissioner, Sushil Chandra, were expected to arrive by a late night flight.

The ECI team led by Chandra and the two commissioners are slated to hold a series of meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday with senior bureaucrats and officials of the State government.

Meetings will also be held with representatives of political parties, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), State police officials, nodal officers of State and Central government enforcement agencies and Collectors and SPs of both the districts.

On December 22, the Commission is scheduled to meet State Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary Finance and DGP Goa and hold discussions relating to the nitty-gritties of conducting the elections in a free and fair manner.

According to a statement issued by Additional Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Narayan Sawant, IAS, a press conference will be addressed on Wednesday morning before the team winds up its 3-day visit to the State.
