Director of Education Shailesh Zingade on Saturday assured urgent remedial measures at the Government Higher Secondary School in Sanguem.
He was speaking to media persons after visiting the Sanguem HSS to take stock of the collapse of the false ceiling in the school hall, which left five students injured.
Accompanied by School Principal Sudesh Naik, Zingade inspected the school premises and the hall where the incident had occurred.
Zingade attributed the collapse of the false ceiling to the movement of a monkey on the ceiling.
Expressing concern over the potential for severe injuries from the tin sheets with sharp edges that make up the false ceiling, Zingade stressed that student safety is paramount and will not be compromised. He assured that due steps and precautionary measures would be implemented at the earliest.
Based on information and suggestions from Principal Naik, he said preventing the entry of monkeys requires fencing the compound wall and remedying the gap on the rooftop that allowed the monkeys access to the false ceiling area.
Zingade informed that his office has already begun addressing the matter and will soon send a formal request to the PWD to submit an estimate for the necessary fencing and related works. While a precise timeline is unavailable, Zingade projected that the work would be treated as urgent and completed within 3–6 months. Meanwhile, Principal Sudesh Naik confirmed that the student who had been kept under observation at the District Hospital in Margao is doing well and was scheduled for discharge on Saturday.
