Floor of fourth floor lands into bedroom of third floor

Eight family members, including a two-year-old child, were injured after the floor of a 50-year-old building collapsed at Vasco on Friday evening.
The eight members of the family who were staying on the fourth floor of Happy Apartments near government school Vasco were injured after the floor of the unused bedroom collapsed and landed on the third floor.
According to the neighbours, the incident occurred at about 7.45 pm when a family member, Salim Shaik (50) who had gone to the unused bedroom suddenly fell down due to giddiness.
“As the family members noticed Salim down on the floor, the remaining six members along with the two-year-old child rushed to his rescue,” a neighbour said.
As family members were in the process of shifting Salim out of the bedroom, the floor suddenly came crashing down and all eight members went down along with the floor, which landed in the third floor bedroom.
The city councillor, who is staying close by, along with the locals rushed and rescued all the family members who were rushed to Chicalim Cottage Hospital for medical aid. Luckily, no one was staying on the third floor.
Vasco Police and fire officials rushed to the site and vacated all other occupants of the building, which has 12 flats.
The neighbours have identified the injured family members as Rushma Shaik (40), Maijabi (38), Munni (30), Gulshan (25), Salim (50), Kayas (12), Samreen (18) and Arshad (2).
Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida, NCP president Jose Philip D’Souza and Mormugao Municipal Council Chairperson Deepak Naik also rushed to the site to take stock of the situation.
Speaking to The Goan, Almeida said the building was in a dilapidated condition and he would direct MMC Chief Officer Deepali Naik to inspect the building and declare it unsafe.
Chairperson Deepak Naik said he would write to the PWD building section to inspect the building and submit the report.
“Once we get the report and if PWD building section declares it unsafe, then we will issue notices to all the residents of the building to vacate it for their own safety,” said Naik.
