The State government has exempted electric vehicles from paying road tax, making Goa one of the few States in the country to offer this incentive as a push towards cleaner vehicles.
The notification in this regard issued by Director of Transport Nikhil Desai has exempted "Electric Operated Vehicles" or EOVs from the payment of tax under the Goa Daman and Diu Motor Vehicles Act, 1974.
In a statement to the media, Desai said the move was to provide a push and incentivise the use of electric vehicles in the State.
While currently the options available to those seeking to buy electric vehicles are limited, the number of vehicles available is set to improve with several vehicles from Tata, Mahindra and other brands expected to be launched in the coming months.
Several States, most notably Maharashtra, have already begun rolling out incentives to users to go electric, in tune with the government's, albeit ambitious, goals to have only electric vehicles being sold in the country by 2030.
