Electricity issues halt waste baling operation at Sonsodo

MARGAO

The dry waste baling operation at the Sonsodo dumping site has been disrupted for the last two days due to electricity issues.

Complaints have also come over the shortage of plastic strips required to bale the dry waste into bundles.

Even as Margao MLA Digambar Kamat is bracing up to inaugurate dry waste baling operation at the Nessai Industrial estate on Tuesday evening, baling operations have been hit because of issues relating to the power supply.

The Goan understands that out of the five baling machines set up at Sonsodo, only a lone balling machine was functioning on Monday, while four machines could not run for want of power load.

MMC officials are believed to have called Power department officials in a bid to fix the issue, but they have told the civic officials that the fault lies internally coming under the domain of the municipal body.

An official informed that baling operations have been adversely affected for want of power supply at Sonsodo.

“Just imagine when only one machine has operated on Monday while four others could not function because of electric issues,” the official added.

Replying to a question, the official shifted the blame to higher civic officials and the Chairperson to rope in the services of a private electrician to rectify the fault.

“Every time, the administration tries to take decisions in emergencies, some people look at these decisions negatively. Hence, it’s better that higher officials and Chairperson take the initiative and engage the services of the electrician,” the official added.

Meanwhile, senior MMC officials, mostly hailing from the technical section, called on the Additional Collector, South Srinet Kothwale, who holds the additional charge of Margao Municipal Chief Officer in the Collectorate on Monday. While the civic officials are believed to have called on the Chief Officer for official work, one of these officials is believed to have drawn to the reports that files pertaining to the payment of bills are not cleared expeditiously by the civic body.

The official has reportedly drawn the attention of Kothwale that even owners of earth moving machinery now hesitate to give their machine on hire given delay in the payments.
