An elevator to climb a one-storey building? If one goes by the construction work in the heritage precincts of the Goa Police Headquarters, the reality is laid bare.
While construction work is going on at the police headquarters located in the heart of the city, top police officials were tight-lipped over the need for a lift for a building that has just one floor.
An officer who spoke to The Goan on condition of anonymity said the proposal was moved way back in 2019 when the late Pranab Nanda, IPS, was the Director-General of Police. Nanda had died in office in 2019.
Construction workers are also hard at work to modify the staircase of the same building, which the officer told The Goan had an unusually high angle of elevation and was difficult to negotiate for the aged and infirm.
Meanwhile, another proposal for a similar elevator for the same heritage building occupied by the Institute Menezes Braganza is gathering dust amidst bureaucratic red-tape. IMB had proposed the elevator to facilitate access to its hall on the first floor for persons with physical disabilities.
