The MMC anti-encroachment drive was carried out by municipal workers and inspectors in the presence of a police force.
The drive carried out by MMC on Saturday, usually believed to be a non-working day, took many by surprise and many appreciated the MMC’s move to clear roadsides of encroachments.
Speaking to reporters, MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues said anti-encroachment drives would continue across other wards as well.
"We have decided to take strict action against all kinds of encroachments and we will not tolerate such kiosks and fruit or vegetable vendors operating from footpaths or roadsides,” said Rodrigues.
“We had received a lot of complaints from residents and I also received a letter from the Police and Traffic Cell to clear the encroachment causing hindrance to motorists along the highway and creating traffic congestion.”
“We will continue such drives to other wards as well. People must clear encroachments on their own before the MMC starts to act on them. The MMC will not allow encroachment in any part of its jurisdiction and we will initiate stringent action if people are found indulging in encroachments," said Rodrigues.
