“Lot of open defecation is taking place because people cannot afford to construct toilets. There is a need to build new toilets through Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) to arrest open defecation,” D’Souza said.
The acting chairperson was speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the five days urban self-help group (SHG) Mela in the open space at old Asilo hospital on Sunday.
The SHG Mela organized by the Goa State Urban Livelihood Mission in collaboration with MMC gives a platform to the women involved in SHG activities to promote their products.
Speaking further, the acting chairperson said there was need to take the Swacch Bharat Mission to the door steps of the people.
She emphasized that people, besides keeping their homes clean, should also take the initiative to keep the surroundings clean. D’Souza’s statement assumes significance as out of total 20 wards in Mapusa civic body only three wards are open-defecation free.
The acting chairperson further appealed to the gathering to take advantage of the various courses provided by GSUDA to be self-sufficient.
Former GSUDA vice-chairperson, Sudhir Kandolkar advised the women in SHGs to focus in branding their products to get better reach.
He further said women should take advantage of various subsidies provided by the government to SHGs.
DMA J Ashok Kumar spoke about various schemes and facilities provided by GSUDA and urged people to take advantage of the same. Seven women were felicitated on the occasion for best performance in their respective areas. Former chairperson, Sandip Falari and councilors were also present.
