After the meeting, Sarpanch Luis Quadros told The Goan that the Panchayat did not take any decision on the question of issuing occupancy certificate to the housing project at Thursday’s meeting as was feared by the farmers and a group of Panchayat members.
He said the Panchayat has decided to engage an engineer, a technical expert, who will study the entire issue, including the space for the relocation of the Chapel and the farmers issue on the question of drainage and submit report to the body.
“After we receive the report from the technical expert, the Panchayat will discuss the matter and submit the report to High Court for an appropriate decision,” Luis said.
, while asserting that the Panchayat was not in any haste to issue the occupancy certificate as was made to appear by the farmers and the group of panchayat members.
The Raia Farmers Club and panchayat members comprising of former Sarpanchas Rumaldo Gonsalves and Xavier Fernandes, besides panch member Melba Colaco had on Wednesday had knocked the doors of the high court if the Panchayat body issues occupancy certificate to the buildings in question.
The trio had maintained that the panchayat should not shy away in addressing the grievances of the farmers on grounds that Section 102 of the Panchayat Raj Act mandates the Panchayat body to verify if there is sufficient provision for draining of water before issue of occupancy certificate.
