Shiroda constituency will now benefit from enhanced water supply, with the release of 10 MLD of water supply through Zuari River (under water) from the JICA project to Borim and Shiroda villages on Thursday morning.
According to a press release, the water supply will be released at a function by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in the presence of PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar, South Goa MP Adv Narendra Sawaikar, Chief Secretary Parimal Rai and PWD Principal Chief Engineer Uttam Parsekar.
Stating that the water supply in Shiroda constituency needed attention, Dhavalikar said, “Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and I had been making constant efforts to work out a permanent solution to the drinking water problem in Shiroda constituency.”
“The water supply problem in Shiroda constituency had been pending for so many years and we decided to give it priority. Despite encountering various problems and criticisms from the opposition, we have been finally able to resolve the water problem. People from Shiroda constituency will now get 10 MLD of water supply,” said Dhavalikar while speaking to The Goan.
Stating that the 10 MLD water project has been financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the PWD minister added, “Our aim is to provide 24-hour water supply to every household in Shiroda and for that, we have made special plans for all panchayats in the constituency, namely Bethora, Nirankal, Borim, Shiroda and Panchwadi.”
“Only 8 MLD of water is supplied to this entire area from the Selaulim water plant, while the actual requirement is about 12 MLD. I have discussed the problem with the chief minister and he gave his nod to this water project. We have finally completed this work in phases,” Dhavalikar added.
Dhavalikar admitted that people from Bethora, Nirankal and Kodar were not getting sufficient water, but promised that they would get ample water supply in the near future. “At Opa, work on the 27 MLD water treatment plant will be completed by June and 3 MLD of water will be supplied to these areas,” said Dhavalikar.
Insisting that Shiroda constituency should not lag behind on the development front, Dhavalikar said the constituency had been sidelined by the local MLAs.
“In order to give a right direction to development, people of Shiroda constituency must elect the right candidate in the forthcoming Lok Sabha and assembly by-poll,” Dhavalikar said.
“I feel bad that the MLA from Shiroda, instead of giving cooperation, had tried to stall development work by using different tactics. Some had even tried to hinder PWD work and complains were even forwarded to the chief minister,” said Dhavalikar.
