With no let up in the number of Covid cases in the state and in South Goa, the number of patients admitted in the 150-bedded ESI hospital, Margao went up to 125 on Wednesday.
By evening, however, the hospital received a minor respite when as many as 17 patients were discharged from the hospital, while three were shifted to the government hospital.
Till Wednesday evening, the number of patients undergoing treatment at the ESI hospital hospital stood at 105 after the discharge of 17 patients and shifting of the three patients.
The ESI hospital has been reopened for Covid operations with effect from Sunday after a four month shut down. Since then, the number of patients admitted in the hospital has gone up with each passing day, with health officials attributing the rise in cases to the continuous spike in Covid cases.
While ESI hospital doctors and paramedics led by medical superintendent Dr Vishwajit Faldesai along with a team of resident doctors from the Goa Medical College and hospital, Bambolim have been attending to the patients, the health authorities are slowly putting the manpower requirements in place.
Sources said additional nurses were made available at the disposal of the ESI hospital on Wednesday to take care of the requirements of patients. Similarly, a couple of X-ray technicians have also reported at the hospital today.
Sources, however, said there’s no sign of the early introduction of ICU and ITU facilities at the ESI hospital, with officials saying that patients who require these facilities are being admitted in the South Goa district hospital. “May be at a later date, ICU and ITU facility may take shape at the ESI hospital depending on the infrastructure and logistics availability”, the official added.

MARGAO: The number of active Covid cases in the jurisdiction of Margao Urban Health Centre almost touched the 1000-mark, with the total Covid cases hovering at 998 on Wednesday.
In another development, which may indicate the spread of Covid cases, the number of active Covid cases in the jurisdiction of Balli Primary Health Centre, which has jurisdiction over the Cuncolim Municipal area, has shot up drastically in the last two days.
A glance at the health bulletin showed that the number of active Covid cases in the Margao Urban Health Centre area has touched 998 on Wednesday as against 950 cases on Tuesday, a rise in 48 cases.
In fact, Covid cases have seen an sharp rise in the Margao Urban Health centre area in the last one week, with cases rising with each passing day.
Meanwhile, the number of active Covid cases have gone up to 135 in the jurisdiction of Balli Primary Health Centre. While the number of active Covid cases in the Balli PHC was pegged at 96 on Tuesday, the cases have now gone up to 135 on Wednesday, a rise in 39 new cases.
Sources informed that though the Cuncolim Industrial Estate has not reported any Covid cases in the second wave, a number of cases in families have been reported in the PHC area in the last couple of days.
