Reliable sources have informed that the State’s excise collections for three-month period between December 2018 and February 2019 stood at Rs 136.4 crore, which was 18.8% more than the collections in the corresponding
period in the previous financial year.
The sources further informed that the growth in excise collections was due to increased consumption of alcohol and also due to higher excise duty in FY 2018-19 compared to FY 2017-18. The State had collected Rs 114.8 crore through the way of excise in three months from December 2017 to February 2018.
Of the three months, highest growth was witnessed in December 2018. Goa earned Rs 55.2 crore excise in December 2018, which was 23.8% more than Rs 44.6 crore collected in December 2017. The State’s excise collections were Rs 37.1 crore in January 2019, which was 12% more than Rs 33.1 crore collected in January 2018. In February 2019, excise collections touched Rs 44.1 crore, which was 18.7% more than Rs 37.1 crore collected in February 2018. The State had implemented increase in excise duty on various kinds of alcohol in FY 2018-19, which has resulted in growth in excise collections to an extent.
On the manufacture of IMFL like whiskey and vodka (with less than 80 U.P. strength), the government had increased the excise duty to Rs 25 per bulk litre provided the MRP is not more than Rs 100 per 750 ml bottle. Earlier, excise duty was Rs 20 per bulk litre on same category of
alcohol provided the price wasn’t more than Rs 90 per 750 ml bottle.
