Even as Chief Minister Pramod Sawant extended restrictions by one more week, former MLA Vijay Poi Khot and the Canacona Nagrik Samiti (CNS) are among the growing voices to demand a stringent and total four-day lockdown in Canacona from Monday.
They have demanded that all shops, including those dealing in essential supplies, be shut down to prevent people from moving on the streets and in public places, thereby risking their lives and increasing their chances of contracting Covid.
Appealing to people in Canacona to observe a total shutdown, Khot said, “We are certain that people may have enough provisions in their homes for at least the next four next days.”
“The movement of people has to be strictly prohibited to break the Covid chain. If there are any requirements for essential commodities or daily provisions please approach elected representatives to assist you. The need for a total shutdown is essential in Canacona,” said Khot.
Khot was speaking at an informal meet attended by prominent residents at Chaudi on Sunday.
CNS Convenor Shantaji Naikgaunkar, councillors Ramakant Naikgaunkar, Dhiraj Naikgaunkar, Shristhal sarpanch, ex-CMC chairpersons Ajay Bhagat, Diwakar Pagi, BJP Block President Nandip Bhagat, RBS Komarpant, Shankar Naik, were among those present at the meet.
While demanding a stringent and total lockdown by four more days, the CNS appealed to all shop owners/business owners to cooperate by shutting down their establishments and also requested the people of Canacona to observe this extended shut down for public safety.
“Everything must remain strictly closed, with no exception. Let us do it to save precious lives,” said CNS Convenor Naikgaunkar.
