Airport Director Gagan Malik said extension of the present terminal was being proposed at the same site where the old terminal building had been demolished.
"We have a rapid growth in domestic passengers and we want to shift the domestic security hold on the international side and the international terminal to the domestic side.”
“This way, we can accommodate more domestic passengers, handle big international flights, reduce passenger distance to exit the airport and increase on-time performance of international flights by increasing the turnaround time," said Malik.
Malik said the expansion was being carried out considering the future growth of the airport, growth of aviation industry, rising footfalls in Goa and subsequent increase in number of counters, security holds and other infrastructure.
"The AAI is in all readiness but we have to go through this procedure and as soon as approvals come, which is expected by mid-January, we will start work immediately and we will try to complete the project by June 2022, so that we can offer better facility to passengers.”
“We are expanding the capacity to have around 11.2 million passengers and during the pre-Covid times, we were handling 8 million passengers," said Malik.
