Goa Forward Party (GFP) has alleged that the Goa government intended to discreetly approve its proposal to legalize ganja despite criticism that it will further boost the drug menace in the coastal State.
At a press conference on Friday, GFP President Vijai Sardesai claimed that if not for a Right To Information application from his office, ganja could have been legalized.
“I exposed the government’s move to legalize Ganja in Goa in 2020, following which in January 2021, CM Pramod Sawant assured on the floor of the House that his government will drop the proposal. But in September 2022, when we filed an RTI to the Public Health Department, we received a reply stating that the file is under submission and is with the law department,” he said.
Last month, the party president was allowed to examine the entire file pertaining to the proposal after over a year, only to find possible moves to legalize ganja. Sardesai alleged that the file has a backdated order claiming the proposal was dropped in 2021.
