Extortion of tourists: Restaurants' licences could be suspended

PANAJI

Amid a surge in extortion from tourists, intimidation and assault along the coastal belt, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has threatened to suspend licences of commercial establishments where such incidents occur.

His warning comes in the wake of instances wherein quite a few male tourists were recently subjected to assault and robbery by either restaurant and club operators or their bouncers.

Allegations are such that these tourists are lured by company of girls at “dance bars” but are instead left with high bills on alcohol.

Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting on Thursday, Sawant stated that irrespective of whether the establishments are directly involved in the nuisance, the government will suspend its licenses for a straight six months if the incident occurs in its premises.

Goa Police, particularly the Calangute police have registered such cases in the recent past with even videos of 'tourists' being thrashed going viral.
