PANAJI
A 32-year-old woman, who had allegedly absconded after cheating the Panaji branch of CSB Bank by pledging fake gold ornaments to secure a loan of Rs 7.35 lakh, has been arrested by Goa police.
Panaji police identified the accused as Jannat Hanabarkadadi, originally from Kevnem, Caranzalem, and currently residing in Asalatpura, Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh.
According to details shared by the PRO office, the accused had obtained a gold loan by pledging 16 fake gold bangles weighing around 128 grams before April 16, 2025. The fraud reportedly caused a loss of around Rs 7.35 lakh to the bank.
The case dates back to July last year, when an FIR was registered against Hanabarkadadi and Pranesh Karekar (38) in connection with the alleged fraud.
Police had earlier stated that Karekar, who worked as a bank valuer, had allegedly certified the fake ornaments as genuine during the loan verification process. The woman had reportedly been absconding since the offence was committed.
In the latest development, police said they received reliable information that she was likely to visit Goa again. Based on the tip-off, Panaji police kept watch on her movements, traced her, and brought her to Panaji Police Station, where she was formally arrested for further investigation.
