Farmers continue sit-in agitation to oppose IIT

SANGUEM

The sit-in agitation by farmers opposing the IIT project at Cotarli-Sanguem entered the second day, with farmers participating in the agitation throughout the day.
The farmers led the sit-in agitation following the imposition of Section 144 by the South Goa Collector at Cotarli village, where the farmers led several agitations during the survey operations to demarcate the site for the IIT project.
As the number of agitators began increasing, government authorities decided to impose Section 144 in the area to prevent a further gathering of farmers.
Speaking at the sit-in agitation, farmers Rupabai Chari and Dattaram Gaonkar appealed to the government to get the project shifted elsewhere, as the IIT project at Cotarli village would destroy their farmland and other agricultural plantations in the area.
The farmers appealed to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to visit the site along with farmers to understand the ground realities.
Dattaram Gaonkar in particular also requested Sanguem MLA Subhash Phaldessai to accompany him and see those areas under cultivation and possession of the farmers within the proposed site.
The farmers reiterated that their agitation would continue till their demand is met and the project stands shifted elsewhere.
