There has been few takers to the government scholarships for post-graduation courses in Konkani, with not a single student applying for a PhD scholarship with the Directorate of Official Language in the last five years.
According to details, the Directorate of Official Language has a provision of offering an annual scholarships of Rs 12,000 for a maximum of 15 students for the BA degree in Konkani, Rs 18,000 for a maximum five students pursuing MA in Konkani and Rs 25,000 for a maximum of two students pursuing PhD studies in Konkani.
In the last five years, a total of 58 students have availed of the scholarship to pursue BA course from the 75 scholarships available.
However, only 10 students have availed of the government scholarship to pursue MA studies in the 25 scholarships available.
The situation was even worse at the PhD level, with not a single person availing of the scholarship from the 10 scholarships available in the last five years.
The Directorate of Official Language claims to have given scholarships to almost all those who had applied for the scheme in the last five year.
Only two applications had been rejected so far during these five years on grounds that they did not fulfill the criteria of the scheme.
Sources felt there has been poor awareness about the government scholarship for students pursuing Konkani courses, which could explain why only a few students at all levels have been applying for the scholarship.
