A 26-bedded Covid care centre for Nuvem constituency has finally become a reality at the Old Age Home, Majorda on Thursday.
The centre was inaugurated by Nuvem MLA Wilfred D’Sa in the presence of local Parish Priest Fr Ave Maria Afonso, Priests representing other Parishes and the Sarpanchas of the villages in the constituency.’
Speaking to the media after the inauguration, MLA D’Sa said the Majorda Old Age Home was zeroed in to house the Covid care centre after it underwent renovation by the Goa Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) at a cost of Rs two crore. “The idea of the Covid care centre at Majorda came after Fr Ave Maria Afonso suggested to set up such a centre in view of the Covid surge during the second wave where the virus large number of population claiming many deaths”, he said .
The MLA added: “A number of sites were shortlisted for the proposed Covid care centre, but we finally zeroed in on the Old age home since it underwent renovation at a cost of Rs two crore”.
The MLA thanked the Parish Priest of Majorda and the other Priests who extended their support to make the Covid care centre a reality.
Expressing his gratitude to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, the Nuvem MLA said the Chief Minister sanctioned the doctors and staff to man the centre, which helped in the inauguration of the Covid care centre. “Many people have asked questions why the Covid care centre now when the cases are on a decline in the state. We have to be prepared to face the worst, more so when the experts talk about the third wave”, he said, adding that the virus had spread in the community claiming more lives in the second wave for want of adequate preparation.
The Covid care centre will have a provision for both male and female wards, and a provision being made for a children’s ward. “While the Sarpanch has made arrangements for the beds, other items required to run the centre has been provided by the Wilfred D’Sa Charitable Trust”, he said.
