Over a decade after the road was thrown open for traffic around 2012, the eastern bypass will be finally illuminated with street lights, besides crash barriers and solar blinkers.
The government has floated a tender to illuminate the 2.8 km stretch of the eastern bypass - from Arlem circle to the Nuvem junction - at a cost of around Rs 1.5 crore.
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai along with Margao municipal councillors inspected the road on Wednesday with senior PWD and power officials wherein it was decided that the road will be finally illuminated within the next three months.
The MLA told the media after the inspection that it took the government a decade to take up the work of illumination of the eastern bypass.
“Recently, we heard Congress-turned-BJP MLA Digambar Kamat saying he had taken up many projects in Margao along with then MLA Damu Naik. The eastern bypass was one such project which was neither illuminated nor had safety measures in place resulting in accidents,” he said.
The Fatorda MLA demanded that while the Power department will take up the illumination work, the PWD should install crash barriers along the stretch, besides solar blinkers.
“Such facilities have been put in place along the western bypass. This only goes to show that projects executed in the city over a decade ago were half-completed,” he said while taking a dig at his Margao counterpart.
Taking cognizance of the illegal parking of heavy-duty trucks on the road during the night, the MLA urged the police to crack a whip against the trucks before the locals take the law into their hands and stone the vehicles.
He also demanded that the Goa police crack down on the dumping of chicken waste along the eastern bypass, causing a nuisance to the locals and farming community.
