MARGAO
Curtains have finally come down on the long-drawn battle by the residents of Aquem-Baixo with the South Goa demolition squad finally dismantling and razing down the illegal mobile tower erected by a cellular phone company some years ago.
Residents of Aquem-Baixo have been demanding the demolition of two mobile towers erected in the village, one at Shantinagar on a building and the other one opposite the main gate of the military camp.
While the demolition squad had played truant on previous occasions, for reasons best known to the agencies, the police force, PWD workers were mobilised in strength on Wednesday to get the mobile tower camouflaged at a water tank atop a building at Shantinagar.
Sources in the district Collectorate, South informed that the second mobile tower will be razed down early next week.
The issue over the mobile towers had been figuring at almost every gram sabha, with members demanding to know the delay in getting the towers brought down given that they were installed illegally.
While the panchayat body had been insisting that the panchayat had sent a proposal to the Salcete BDO office to initiate action, the demolition operation, however, took its own time for reasons best known to the demolition squad.
