Several residents of Vasco have expressed concerns over a dilapidated building opposite the Vasco police station and have requested the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) to demolish the building before it collapses and causes harm to people in the area.
Speaking to reporters, BJP State Executive Member and social worker Chandrakant Gawas said there are many buildings, including a few municipal buildings, declared unsafe by MMC in Vasco.
“There are many people who park vehicles below the dilapidated building. Trees growing on the walls and there are many visible cracks on the building.”
“The building can collapse if we ignore its precarious condition which poses a danger to people who unknowingly seek shelter below the building. The MMC must act soon before it is too late,” Gawas said.
A resident and social worker from Shantinagar, Prasad Naik, said there was an incident where a concrete slab had fallen off the building some months ago prompting MMC to issue a notice to unsafe buildings.
“Several people who arrive at the Vasco police station sometimes stand below the building for shade. Letters have been written to the Deputy Collector, MMC chief officer and the police to act in the matter,” he said.
Another resident, Kiran Borker, said the MMC or the building owner must either demolish the building or barricade the structure so that people are not exposed to any harm.
“The GEC at Farmagudi had conducted a study on the stability of the building and found it unsafe. The building is in dilapidated condition and cracks have appeared everywhere. We appeal to the MMC to take immediate action,” Borker said.
A resident, Hiru Mahale, recalled that then Vasco PI Nolasco Raposo had written to MMC Chief Officer in October 2017 to take immediate action on the unsafe dilapidated building outside Vasco police station.
“There are around 35 such old buildings and authorities must act. These buildings pose great danger. Fortunately, a tragedy was averted the last time when a concrete block fell from the building outside the Vasco police station. This building could pose a great danger in the monsoon. Authorities must act before it is too late,” Mahale said.
