Fomento’s nine-year long association with Margao Municipal Council’s solid waste management finally came to an end on Thursday after the Margao Municipal Council took over the plant, machinery and other facilities at Sonsodo from the company on Thursday evening.

The civic body took over the Sonsodo plant and machinery days after Fomento offered to hand over the waste treatment facility and other equipment to the Margao municipality in public interest and to prevent any adverse fall out on the garbage processing scenario in Margao.

Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar accepted the keys of the plant as well as other facilities at Sonsodo from the hands of Fomento representative Sudin Raiturkar in the civic body, marking the return of the Margao civic body back at Sonsodo after a gap of nine years.

The municipality took over the waste treatment facility after a day of hectic activity at Sonsodo, with Fomento representatives and MMC engineers carrying out an inventory of the plant, machinery and equipment at the site.

The civic body took over the Sonsodo waste treatment

facility after the seven-day time-frame set by the South Goa District Court to the municipality expired on Wednesday.

Fomento’s exit comes exactly nine years after the company had inked a Concession Agreement with the civic body on February 1, 2011 to treat the solid waste supplied to the plant by the Margao Municipal Council. While Fomento and the MMC signed the concession agreement in February 2011, trial run of the waste treatment facility had started from December 12, 2012, marking the end of open dumping of waste at Sonsodo.

In January last, Fomento had served a preliminary notice of termination on the Margao civic body which was followed by a termination notice issued on June 10, calling upon the civic body to pay a termination amount of Rs 14 crore, which came into effect on August 10 after the expiry of the 60-day notice period.
