A fire engulfed a flat at a residential building in Mundvel-Vasco on Thursday morning.
There was no loss of life or injuries as the flat had been unoccupied at the time of the incident.
While the cause of the fire is suspected to be due to short circuit, the losses are estimated at several lakhs of rupees.
Alert neighbours alerted the Vasco fire brigade who rushed to the spot and doused the fire while preventing the inferno from spreading to other flats in the building.
Prashanti Shetty said she had heard a noise in the flat and it was only when there was a loud sound that she checked from the balcony and noticed smoke from the flat. She then alerted the residents of the building.
Another neighbour, Meely Jorge, said she heard people shouting for help and alerted the fire brigade, who rushed to the site and doused the fire.
A fire officer said they received a call regarding the fire at about 11.48 am.
"We started our work to douse the fire and we immediately removed two LPG cylinders from the flat. The cause of the fire could be due to a short circuit," said the officer.
