A major fire engulfed scrap material stacked in an open space belonging to a decor unit at Kirbhat-Nuvem on Saturday noon.

Thick black smoke billowing from the spot could be seen from a distance, indicating that large amount of scrap waste was brunt in the incident.

A team of officials from the South Goa Collectorate also rushed to the spot to find out if the unit had adopted fire safety precautions.

Congress leader Everson Vales told the media that though the scrap waste stored outside the unit premises caught fire, the incident is a wakeup call for the authorities to find out whether the unit had fire safety measures in place.

“Today, the waste comprising thermocol, paper etc was reduced to ashes in the fire. Just imagine if the  fire had to spread to the production unit. We have asked the district authorities to find out fire safety compliance adopted by the unit”, he said.

Thanking the district officials for promptly sending a team to the site for inspection, Everson told the media that he has been informed that the administration will initiate suitable action after assessing the situation.

A company representative pointed out that the scrap material stored outside the unit suddenly caught fire around noon.

“Our workers tried to extinguish the fire, but since it was uncontrollable, we called the fire brigade to extinguish the fire”, he said.

The cause of the fire remained unknown.
