A major fire engulfed garbage dump at the SGPDA market parking lot near the vegetable markets on early Saturday morning.
Plumes of dark smoke billowed over the SGPDA ground, polluting the environment and the smoke could be seen from a distance.
The Margao fire brigade rushed to the market to extinguish the raging fire, but many questions remain unanswered and may come to haunt the SGPDA and the Margao Municipal Council.
Questions are bring raised how come the garbage dump took shape on the PDA parking ground close to the toilet block, whether there was any delay by the agencies to lift away the daily waste.
PDA vendors pointed out that waste is being indiscriminately dumped at the area, which has become a favourite ground for stray cattle to feast on the waste.
Given that waste has become a big issue in the SGPDA mega retail market, citizens have called for keeping the market and its surrounding area clean and hygienic. “Waste found around the market complex does not augur well for any market, which ought to be maintained clean and hygienic at all times. There cannot be any excuse for not keeping the market and the surroundings clean,” remarked a senior citizen.
