MMC eyes briquette plant to tackle green waste crisis

The Margao Municipal team inspected the dry waste treatment plant at Saligao.

MARGAO
With the Margao Municipal Council facing issues over the disposal of green and vegetable waste generated in the commercial capital, councillors and Municipal officials have evinced keen interest in a treatment plant having capacity to dispose of the waste to briquettes.

A Margao Municipal team led by civic chief Damu Shirodkar, councillors, Chief Officer Melvyn Vaz, besides Municipal engineer Deepak Desai and engineers visited Saligao to inspect a dry waste processing plant set up by Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA).

The dry waste processing plant has a capacity to handle waste such as corn cobs, branches, tree branches, old wooden furniture, etc and grounded into powder. In addition, the inner part of the corn cob that remains after removing the corn kernels is procured by order and mixed in a machine according to the ratio and processed at a high pressure to make the final product briquettes.

The team was explained that this product is sold to pharmaceutical companies and is useful for their burners.

The Municipal team, including the civic chief said that setting up such a project to process mixed dry waste in Margao would be beneficial for the city. The company from Punjab is believed to have pointed out that land admeasuring 5,000 square metres of land is required to set up the 20TPD project. During discussions, the company is believed to have said that it would bear the cost of setting up the project.

However, the Margao Municipal Council is expected to take a decision on the plant only after receiving a proposal and after discussions at the Council meeting, sources informed.
