A fire caused extensive damage to cashew and coconut plantations in Kumthole area of Sattari taluka, causing extensive damage to a young farmer Vishwanath Gaonkar.
Locals suspect the fire had been deliberately set rather than accidental. They pointed out that burn patterns at multiple spots indicate intentional ignition.
As soon as the fire was noticed, local residents rushed to the spot and tried to control the flames using buckets of water and tree branches. However, due to the intensity of the fire and lack of proper firefighting equipment, the damage escalated.
Although the fire brigade was informed, response efforts were reportedly delayed due to the remote location and narrow access roads.
Due to intense summer heat, dry grass, fallen leaves, and vegetation, the fire spread rapidly and took a devastating form within a short span.
At the time of the incident, cashew trees were in the fruiting stage, and many of them were completely destroyed. Coconut trees in the plantation were also significantly damaged.
This has not only affected the current harvest but has also put future yields at risk, dealing a severe financial blow to the farmer and impacting his family’s livelihood.
The incident has triggered strong anger among villagers. Locals have demanded that those responsible for deliberately setting the fire be identified and strict action be taken against them. Repeated such incidents have also created fear among farmers in the region.
Residents have appealed to authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and take preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future. They have also demanded increased patrolling in forest and agricultural areas and better fire safety infrastructure.
Meanwhile, officials have initiated a panchanama, and there is growing demand for immediate financial assistance and compensation for the affected farmer.
The agriculture department and disaster management authorities are expected to take note of the situation and provide relief at the earliest.
