Fire at the congested Margao Municipal Gandhi market on late Wednesday gave some anxious moments for the vendors and municipal authorities.
It was however, realised that the fire took place at an abandoned godown in the market area and was immediately extinguished without causing any damage.
As reports spread that fire has erupted at the Gandhi market, vendors and the fire brigade rushed to the market, only to find that waste was engulfed in fire in an abandoned godown.
The fire brigade put off the fire before it could spread to the adjoining structures.
Sources informed that the abandoned structure was being used by anti-social elements as evident by the waste and mattress found around the site. “Someone must have thrown a cigarette or beedi, resulting in the fire”, sources said.
