First swarmed by tourists, St Tome now faces thieves

Three commercial outlets broken into, cash stolen in single night

The locality was in the news recently when residents got into unsavoury skirmishes with Instagrammer tourists swarming their neighbourhood and disturbing their peace.

Now, St Tome residents have another threat to fend against -- thieves.

On the intervening night of Saturday-Sunday multiple business establishments were broken into and cash stolen from some.

Locals said the thieves broke into at least four establishments, mostly restaurants and cafes, were broken into but Panaji police have registered only a single FIR, where money was found to be stolen.

The famed Ashok Bar and Venite restaurant were among the establishments targeted as was a recently established ‘Larder and Folk Cafe’.

Residents from St Tome suspect it to be the handiwork of an organised gang and said that one residential house was also possibly targeted as its gate was broken.

Meanwhile Panaji Police Inspector V Chodankar told The Goan that the FIR was registered on Sunday evening after it was established that cash was stolen. 

He said, the police are investigating the case and expect to gain some leads soon.

He however did not disclose the identity of the establishment pertaining to which the FIR was registered.
