With weatherconditions improving and migrant labour slowly but surely reporting at thejetty, a number of fishing vessels ventured out for fishing from the Cutbonafishing jetty on Tuesday for the first time this season.
This is the first timethis season that purse seining vessels ventured out for fishing from theCutbona fishing jetty. The decision to go out for fishing on Tuesday assumessignificance and comes against the backdrop of the demand made by the residentsof Cutbona that the boat owners should start the season from September 1 inview of COVID-19 pandemic.
In fact, anxious andworried residents of Cutbona had appealed to the boat owners operating from theCutbona fishing jetty to delay the fishing operations at least till August endto ensure that migrant workers do not come in droves at the fishing jetty andspread coronavirus in the locality.
Though many fishingvessels are still anchored at the jetty, waiting for the arrival of the migrantcrew from the states of Jharkhand, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, a number of purseseine vessels ventured out for fishing from the jetty on Tuesday.
While the IndianRailways are yet to resume full-fledged train operations, sources said many aboat owner had brought the migrant crew by chartered buses, especially from thestate of Andhra Pradesh.
General secretary ofAll Goa Purse Seine Owners Association, Seby Cardozo said around 20 purse seinevessels ventured out in the sea for the first time from Cutbona this season.“We had agreed that the purse seine vessel owners will start the season fromSeptember 1 because of COVID pandemic. Around 20 vessels went out in the sea onTuesday,” Seby said.
