A 74-year-old man fromAlorna succumbed to Covid, while 33 new cases were detected in Pernem taluka onTuesday.
According to reports, the patient was undergoing treatment atGMC hospital and he had tested positive for Covid.
This is the fifth death from Covid reported in Pernem taluka,with the previous four deaths being reported from Tambose, Ugvem, Parcem andKeri.
Meanwhile, 33 new positive cases were detected in the taluka onTuesday, with 14 of them from Mandrem alone.
Cases were reported in Mandrem (14), Parcem (5), Korgao (2),Pernem town (4), Arambol (3), Morjim (2) and one each in Keri, Agarwada andTuem.
With the State’s borders now opened up without anyCovid-related restrictions from Tuesday, people have expressed concern of afurther rise in Covid cases in Pernem, which has four border check posts withMaharashtra at Patradevi-Banda, Naibag-Satarda, Kiranpani-Aronda andTiracol-Redi.
So far, Pernem has registered 564 cases, of which 174 areactive and 490 patients have been discharged after recovering from the virus.
Mandrem is way ahead in the taluka with 95 cases, followed byPernem town (59) and Arambol (52).
Despite a sharp rise in Covid cases, there has been no sign ofoperations at the Covid care centre at the Multipurpose Indoor stadium inPernem, which was to have started functioning one month ago.
