South Goa District Collector Ajit Roy on Monday stressed on the importance of National Voters’ Day, saying the functioning of the Election Commission of India, which conducts elections, is the most significant landmark of the Indian Constitution.
He was speaking at the South Goa Collectorate at the celebration of the 11th National Voters’ Day on Monday. “This is the foundation day of Election Commission of India on January 25, 1950,” he said and appealed to people to use their right to vote.
Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes, who was the chief guest, complimented the first time new voters, who were enrolled in the electoral roll and appealed to them to be proud of their right and exercise it fearlessly without bias.
He also requested them to inform others including their parents to come to vote rather than take a holiday on the voting day. “Voters’ ID card is an identity document issued by Election Commission of India to adult domiciles of India who have attained 18 years of age for casting their ballot at every election,” he said while requesting the young voters to encourage others like them to enroll as voters.
Additional Collector South Surendra Naik also spoke on the occasion, Nodal Officer SVEEP Dipali Naik was also present.
Besides official, Sidharth Yaji and Spirit Fernandes also attended the programme.
The voters took a pledge on the occasion. Prizes were distributed to the officials who had worked with sincerity in many elections.
Some of the new voters were felicitated and handed over their Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC ) on the occasion to commemorate the National Voters’ Day.
Making voters empowered, vigilant, safe and informed is the theme of this year.
