MARGAO
A waste mound, stink, besides foul odour welcomed hordes of shoppers from Margao in particular and Saxtti in general in the SGPDA mega retail fish, vegetable and meat market on Sunday.
Renovated on the lines of Dubai fish market, the retail market is craving for attention from the authorities. In fact, it’s a sheer irony that shoppers had to contend with stench and filth right near the area where the foundation stone was laid in 2018 for the renovation of the retail market.
Agitated fish vendors blame the messy situation in the mega market for lack of maintenance. In fact, fish vendor Bostean has conveyed a message to the PDA to either clear the stench emanating at the market entrance gates or face action by the vendors in the new year.
Waste dumping seemed to have not stopped on the pavement near the fish cutting shed. Unsold fish and waste was found disposed of at the place, turning the area into an eyesore.
Waste dumped near the site was found spilled over to the adjoining fields, indicating that a permanent solution to stop waste dumping on the pavement has eluded the authorities till date.
The vacant market shed adjoining the fish market shed is also craving for attention, with unscrupulous elements converting the shed into a waste dumping yard.
Fish vendor Bostean has claimed that the mosquito menace is another issue plaguing the market. She has made a fervent plea to the SGPDA Chairman, Krishna Daji Salkar to clear the stink and maintain hygiene in the market complex.
“I want to make a appeal to the PDA Chairman through the media to please see the market condition. We are facing the menace of mosquitoes. If no action is forthcoming from the PDA, we will march to the Margao Health centre to lodge our complaint against the PDA over the nuisance and mosquito menace”, she warned.
